OCTOBER 11, 2015 – JERSEY CITY, NJ — The Hudson County Genealogical & Historical Society, one of the only genealogy and family history groups focused entirely on the study of Hudson County, New Jersey, is proud to partner with the Hudson County Community College in the inaugural season of the Benjamin J. Dineen, III and the Dennis C. Hull Gallery in presenting: “Changing America: The Emancipation Proclamation, 1863 and the March on Washington, 1963”, October 14 to November 27, 2015.
The program will help public audiences understand and discuss the relationship between two great people’ movements that resulted in the Emancipation Proclamation, and the March on Washington in 1963. One hundred years separate the Emancipation Proclamation and the March on Washington, yet these two events are profoundly linked together in a larger story of liberty and the American Experience. Both events were the results of people demanding justice. Both grew out of decades of bold actions, resistance, organization, and vision. In both we take inspiration from those who marched toward freedom.
Explore the relationship of two great people’s movements and the impact they have had on the history of our nation via documents, photos, and other images. This traveling exhibition is part of the National Endowment for the Humanities’ Bridging Cultures initiative, “Created Equal: America’s Civil Right Struggle.”
The program is presented by the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture and the National Museum of American History in collaboration with the American Library Association Public Programs Office, the exhibition is made possible by the National Endowment for the Humanities.
The Benjamin J. Dineen, III and the Dennis C. Hull Gallery is located at 71 Sip Avenue, Sixth Floor, Jersey City, NJ 07306. The exhibit will be open Tuesday through Sunday, 1:00 to 6:00 p.m.
About the Hudson County Genealogical & Historical Society
The Hudson County Genealogical Society, a 501 (c)(3) New Jersey Non Profit Corporation, was formed in October 2007 to promote the study of genealogy and the history of Hudson County. The goal of the society is to collect, preserve and index this information in cooperation with local libraries and internet resources, to encourage adherence to the highest standards of research and documentation, to offer educational programs such as lectures, seminars and workshops and to promote the observance of Family History month.
