About This Item

A collection of letters, photos and postcards of and to Joseph D. Rosa, a native of Aviglione, Italy who settled in Kearny, NJ. Born on 12 October 1873, Joseph D. Rosa immigrated to America on 24 September 1902 aboard the Sardigna sailing from Naples. Founder of the Italian School of Cutting & Designing and the International School of Italian Tailors and Cutters, he was a sought-after tailor and taught his methods in both New York, New Jersey and Italy. The collection spans roughly 1939-1956 and includes many letters in Italian and English, photos, postcards and even a short anti-Mussolini propaganda booklet Rosa wrote in support of the United States War effort.

The collection was donated by Ann Stephens who purchased the items. The collection was donated to The Hudson County Genealogical & Historical Society on November 1, 2010.
