September 16, 2017

Event: Annual Field Trip - Hoboken Cemetery
Time: 11:00 am ET
Location: Hoboken Cemetery, North Bergen, NJ
FREE BUT REGISTRATION REQUIRED

If you're up for an adventure, join us on Saturday September 16, 2017 at 11am for our 2017 field trip to Hoboken Cemetery in North Bergen, New Jersey. This garden cemetery has a storied (and sometimes sordid) past and is the final resting place for many interesting former Hudson County residents ranging from politicians to captains of industry and veterans of many wars as well as interesting stone work. Despite these features, Hoboken Cemetery is one of the more forgotten cemeteries in the area, a victim of neglect over the years as the cemetery filled and revenues dropped.

Hudson County Genealogical & Historical Society webmaster Joe Mann will provide some history on the cemetery and take you on a tour of several points of interest, after which you're free to explore on your own. A plot map will be provided to all registered attendees.

IMPORTANT NOTES AND CAUTION

Although the sections of the cemetery closest to the Tonnelle Avenue entrance are usually well-kept, other sections are less well cared for and can be treacherous. Terrain is hilly, many of the old paths have been reclaimed by nature and certain areas have become overgrown and impassible. In addition, expect gopher holes, poison ivy and fallen or unsafely situated grave stones. It is best to not touch or lean against any of the grave stones you may find since they may no longer be well supported. Visitors exploring the cemetery do so at their own risk.

We recommend wearing comfortable shoes or hiking boots, long pants and to bring water.

If you're not up for walking around the more hilly and unkempt areas, you can still enjoy the relatively flat and clear front section of the cemetery.

PARKING

Although there is rarely much activity at the cemetery, we recommend carpooling if possible. When arriving you should pull through the cemetery gate and park along the main road. Beyond that, the paths are narrow and broken and not well-suited for vehicles. Lock your car when leaving it.
