Event: Annual Field Trip: Bayview - New York Bay Cemetery Walking Tour with Noted Jersey City Historian Dennis Doran
Time: 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Location: 321 Garfield Ave, Jersey City, NJ 07305

This tour is limited to 25 people so sign up early to ensure your spot! There is a $10 fee for the tour. Register Now!

Join noted Jersey City historian Dennis Doran and the Hudson County Genealogical Society for this walking tour and exploration of the Bayview-New York Bay Cemetery. The New York Bay cemetery was formed in 1848 and the Bayview Cemetery opened in 1884 on the adjacent property. Located between Garfield and Ocean Avenues, the combined cemeteries extend from Garfield Avenue down to the bottom of the hill that overlooks New York City. In the 1800’s it was described as an attractive spot for New Yorkers to bury their dead because of the beautiful, park like setting overlooking the Hudson River and the ease of access by both stage and steamboat.

Many prominent and notable citizens of Hudson County are buried here. These burials include 2 Former Governors, United States Senators, NJ State Senators, 2 Former Jersey City Mayors, several Congressional Medal of Honor awardees, famous architects, as well as distinguished members of the Jersey City business community and the first Jersey City Firefighter to die in the line of duty.

The cemetery has a memorial to and holds the burials of about 100 employees of the Cunard White Star Line. Cunard operated its passenger line from the Jersey City waterfront for many years. There is a Jewish burial ground in the older New York Bay section that holds many of the oldest Jewish burials in Jersey City dating to the 1850’s.

Please join us for an informative and enlightening glimpse into the history and evolution of this cemetery.

If you'd like to learn more about all of the Hudson County History Walking Tours taking place this summer to celebrate the 175th anniversary of Hudson County, please visit the tour page hosted by the Hoboken Museum.

Time: 11:00 am -- 1:00 pm ET (UTC/GMT -5)
Location: Secaucus Public Library, Secaucus, NJ

Toni McKeen, who previously presented "Research Problems That Made My Eyes Cross" to the Society, will return with a new topic: "Putting Flesh on the Bones of Your Ancestor."

While we all love to go back many generations, as well as going sideways, it is just as important to bring a special relative alive with an in depth study of his or her life. Toni will break the project up into small steps and give guide lines, give ideas for various topics and chapters, then show how to put the work into a book format with designed papers, input photos and charts, and include other hints to produce a wonderful book future generations will love to read and treasure.

About Toni McKeen:
While not doing continuing research on her own family, Toni McKeen has taught several levels of genealogy in her home town of Ridgefield, CT. Her mission is to expose as many people as possible to the fun, excitement, and importance of tracing their own genealogy. Toni believes it is important for everyone to document their family history for themselves and for future generations.

She has been a popular lecturer at various genealogy societies in the New York, Connecticut, Boston, and Long Island areas.
