World War II Displaced Persons: A Stateless People

Presented by: Michele Chubenko

Combat operations, ethnic cleansing, and the fear of genocide uprooted millions of people from their homes over the course of World War II. Between 40 million and 60 million people were displaced. Michelle Chubenko takes us through searching for these people. How did they become displaced? Were they forced laborers? What documents did they create as Displaced Persons? Learn the answer to these questions and more to reconstruct the journey of WWII Displaced Persons using resources of the International Tracing Service (ITS).

ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Michelle Tucker Chubenko is the Europe Research Team Manager and professional genealogist with Legacy Tree Genealogists. With over 30 years’ experience researching her paternal ancestral roots in colonial America and the 20th century flair of her maternal Eastern European ancestry (Ukrainian and Hungarian); she specializes in New Jersey and Eastern European research. She is a founding member with the “Nashi Predky/Our Ancestors” Family History Group at the Ukrainian History and Education Center. She has presented locally on Eastern European research and volunteers as co-coordinator for the Facebook group “Our Ancestors - Наші Предки / Ukrainian Genealogy.”

She was a researcher on TLC’s Who Do You Think You Are? (Season one) and appeared in the Brooke Shields episode, which aired in April 2010. She is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists, local and ethnic genealogical societies, and is active in local history organizations. Michelle has presented genealogical lectures to audiences on a local, regional (NERGC 2017), national level (FGS 2008/Philadelphia and GRIP 2017), internationally (Ontario Ancestors 2019) and attended Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh (GRIP), Institute of Genealogy & Historical Research (IGHR), and Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG) and a ProGen17 graduate. Genealogy Resources at the Jersey City Free Public Library (What's New at the New Jersey Room)

A new year is upon us and we're kicking off a great 2023 schedule of programs by revisiting an important Hudson County resource: The New Jersey Room at the Jersey City Free Public Library. The library has a wealth of resources covering many areas of New Jersey and Hudson County history and genealogy. Danny Klein takes us through some of the best resources available in the library's collection.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Danny is a founding board member of the Hudson County Genealogical & Historical Society, serves as the Society's Librarian/Archivist and on the Newsletter Committee. He was a reporter and editor at The Jersey Journal for 10 years and currently writes a monthly genealogy column for the paper. He works as a librarian at the New Jersey Room of the Jersey City Free Public Library.
